Publishing in JSI—Journal of Spectral Imaging

Publishing in JSI—Journal of Spectral Imaging is made as easy as possible for authors. Our experienced Editors manage the process of peer review, choosing appropriate reviewers who understand the subject. Further, they provide constructive feedback on your paper and, if it is not initially acceptable, endeavour to help you develop it into a first-class state. Once accepted, papers are cared for by our in-house production staff.

Please follow these guidelines to ensure papers are published as quickly and easily as possible.

  • Read the Instructions for Authors
  • Use our bibliographic output style for EndNote to ensure your references are formatted correctly
  • Documents should be formatted following the guidelines in the Instructions for Authors
  • Graphics should be prepared as detailed in the Instructions for Authors
  • Draft a covering letter. All submissions should be accompanied by a covering letter
  • Manuscripts should be checked thoroughly for errors
  • Manuscripts should be submitted online as described below

English language polishing

Whilst our copy editors will work with you to ensure that your paper is published with the clearest language and in accordance with our house style, referees may not have the time to spend trying to understand unclear language. If English is not your first language, consider asking a native English speaker to read your paper before submission. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the discounts that we have negotiated on your behalf with The Charlesworth Group. Please visit their website via this link (http://www.charlesworthauthorservices.com/~IMP) and automatically receive a discount on whichever service you choose. This may help improve the likelihood of your paper being accepted and speed its progress through the peer review process. This is not a requirement, and if it is difficult for you to arrange we will do our best to assess your paper fairly, however, you should understand that this may take a little longer.

Accelerate publication of your important research

JSI Letters offer extremely fast publication whilst retaining thorough peer review.

JSI Letters

JSI Letters can either express the view of the author on a particular aspect of spectral imaging that they wish to comment on, or can very briefly report an interesting aspect of the author’s work: perhaps details of a chemometric routine or a sampling procedure.

Review

JSI Letters are usually published within three weeks of submission, subject to satisfactory review. Letters are normally reviewed by the Editors. Authors are expected to submit revised manuscripts within 48 hours of receiving the referees’ reports.

Requirements

JSI Letters must be no more than four journal pages in length. Letters have an Abstract, as well as up to 10 Keywords to facilitate indexing. Given the accelerated treatment accorded to Letters, it is particularly important that they are written to a standard of English to allow rapid refereeing.

JSI—Journal of Spectral Imaging is an Open Access journal. Currently, there are no charges for publishing in the journal. We will be introducing charges in the future, to ensure the long-term viability of the journal.

There are no charges to submit a paper for review.

Authors can choose from a range of Creative Commons licences: CC BY, CC BY-NC and CC BY-NC-ND.

All of these licences mean that you retain copyright in your paper, and can reuse it in other publications and post the final published PDF on websites and social media sites, and in repositories. The licences also allow others to reuse your paper in various ways; follow the links above to learn more about each licence.

Pre- and post-prints

Authors may, if they wish, archive pre-prints (the original manuscript submitted to JSI before peer review) and post-prints (the accepted manuscript before copy editing and typesetting) as well as the final PDF version.

Editing and production

A paper published under the Open Access option will receive the same careful copy editing and typesetting that IM Publications Open prides itself on.

Permissions

If you are reproducing figures, tables or other material from previously published work or otherwise need to obtain permission to use copyrighted material, you must apply for and obtain permission before submitting your paper. You should ensure that the required permission wording is included in your manuscript.

Many journals offer the ability to request permission online and this may be the quickest and easiest for you; please check the journal's web page for any links to this facility. You can also try using the service offered at www.copyright.com. Alternatively, you can use the form below:

Authors’ Rights

You retain full rights to your work and can reuse it, share it and place it in an institutional or other repository without seeking permission. Further, IM Publications Open grants you permission also to reuse, share and place in an institutional or other repository the final, typeset PDF. Authors may also, if they wish, archive pre-prints (the original manuscript submitted to JSI before peer review) and post-prints (the accepted manuscript before copy editing and typesetting).

Digital preservation

IM Publications Open is a member of PORTICO™, a digital preservation service that ensures the long-term preservation of papers published in member journals.

Once a paper has been accepted it enters our production system and a copy editor will be assigned, and an acknowledgement will be sent.

Copy Editing

The copy editor will check the manuscript to ensure that it is complete. The copy editor will work to ensure that your paper uses consistent terminology and spelling, that the language is clear and unambiguous. The copy editor may need to raise questions with you, either before proofing or on the proofs themselves.

Just-Published Papers (JPPs)

Just-Published Papers (JPPs) are what we call our papers in press. Once your paper has been accepted for publication, all authors have the option of having their paper published immediately as a Just-Published Paper. Your paper is published on the web in a form before copy editing and typesetting has taken place. It is also immediately citable, since all JPPs are allocated a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Information on how to cite a JPP and on DOIs can be obtained from our DOI page.

Once your paper has been typeset and we have received proof corrections from you, this first version will be replaced by the typeset version. A final, definitive, version with page numbers will be available once the complete issue is published online.

Proofs

When the manuscript has been copy-edited and typeset a PDF of the proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. The corrected proofs should be returned to the Production Department as soon as possible.

JSI—Journal of Spectral Imaging publishes papers continuously. There is a single volume per year and no individual issues. Each paper has an Article ID which, with the volume and year of publication, provides a unique identification. In addition, each paper is allocated a DOI which is registered with CrossRef and provides a persistent link to the final published paper.

More information on DOIs can be obtained from our DOI page.

Continuous publication ensures that there is no delay in the publication of your paper. It is of particular benefit for Special Issues, where there may be significant time between acceptance of the first and last papers in the collection.

How long does it take?

Once accepted, papers are logged into our production process, sent for copy editing and then typeset. At this point, you will receive a PDF proof by e-mail for checking. Once we have received any corrections and assuming a second proof is not required, the paper will be published online within a few days if not a few hours. The precise time for all these stages depends on many factors, but you can expect to receive proofs within two weeks of acceptance.

Ensuring that references are in our required format (see Instructions for Authors) and that the paper is clearly written will help speed up the copy editing process. The copy editor may contact you with queries or there may be queries within the proof. Please address these promptly and fully to avoid delay.

All papers published in JSI—Journal of Spectral Imaging have been peer reviewed. JSI follows a blind peer review process. This means that authors are not aware of the identity of reviewers and reviewers know the identity of the author of the paper they are reviewing. Reviewers are expected to practice high ethical standards, including maintaining the confidentiality and not making use of the information they obtain from the review of a manuscript for their own advantage.

The work of reviewers is fundamental to the scientific publishing process and the Editors and Publisher of JSI are most grateful to all those who review for the journal.

Nowadays, there are more ways than ever to promote your paper, however, there are also many more papers being published which makes it easy to become lost in the noise. These guidelines are our suggestions for effective ways for you to promote your paper. Not all will be relevant to you and you may not wish to do all of them; that’s fine, but please work with us to maximise the impact of your paper and do what you can.

What we do

As a routine, every paper published in IM Publications Open journals has a tweet sent about it on publication from the journal’s Twitter account, has a post made on IM Publications Open’s Facebook page, is included in that issue’s Table of Contents alert e-mail and in the journal’s RSS feed. We also create Press Releases for selected papers where there is potential interest in the wider scientific community or within the general public. If you have told us about your ORCID iD, your ORCID profile will be updated with details of your new paper in JSI automatically (provided you give permission, see ORCID article for more information).

Our web pages are carefully structured so that all papers are indexed by Google Scholar. We also supply information to a number of databases, such as China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, CrossRef, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Portico etc. so that they can include accurate information on papers in their collections. Other databases, such as Scopus, update their records directly from our website.

What you can do

Whatever promotional activity you undertake, we strongly suggest that you link to your paper using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). This will ensure that the link always works, even if we restructure our website, and will help ensure that services such as Altmetrics capture any activity around your paper. You can construct a working hyperlink by adding “https://doi.org/” to the start of the DOI; e.g. https://doi.org/10.1255/jsi.2016.a3.

Social media

If you have your own Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or other social media account, please mention the publication of your paper and provide a link using the DOI.

Blogs

If you blog, please make an entry about your paper. If colleagues or others in your field blog, let them know about your paper.

Discussion lists/list servers

If relevant and appropriate, you may wish to tell colleagues on discussion lists about your latest paper.

Personal web page

Don’t forget to update your personal webpage/list of publications with your latest work.

Scholarly reference managers

If you make use of shared online reference managers, make sure your paper is included. You may also wish to include your paper in scholarly communities such as Mendeley, ResearchGate, academia.edu and CiteULike. Since all papers published in JSI are Open Access, you are able to upload the final publisher-produced PDF as well as pre-and post-prints. However, to enable us to provide the most accurate usage counts, we suggest that you only provide a link (using the DOI) to your paper on the JSI website, where anyone can download it in any case.

Press releases

Your university, institution or even your research funder might be interested to produce a Press Release about your paper. Of course, this will not apply every time, but if your paper has particular novelty or wide interest, it is worth asking!

Multimedia enhancements

Whilst this involves a bit more effort, the rewards can be great. You can produce a short video or podcast highlighting your paper. If you do, we would like to make sure we link to it from the abstract, so let us know!

Editors

The role of Editors is to assess the suitability of a paper for publication in the journal. This includes considering the quality, whether it meets the Aims and Scope of the journal and its originality. Reviewers are an essential part of this process, and Editors will select reviewers that they believe have the necessary knowledge and experience to assess the paper. Reviewers’ reports will form an important part of the Editor’s decision as to the acceptability of the paper, but the final decision is the Editor’s.

Confidentiality

Editors will ensure that reviewers’ identities are protected. Editors will also ensure that they keep details of the submitted paper and the work reported in it confidential and will not make use of the information they glean from the paper other than in judging its suitability for publication in the journal until it has been published.

Ethical considerations

Editors will check that the research reported in a paper has been conducted in accordance with relevant ethical standards.

Editors are responsible for investigation and correction of any errors discovered, or reported to them by authors or others. Should work reported in a paper prove to be invalid or fraudulent it will be retracted.

Conflicts of interest

Editors do not handle papers that they have authored, have been authored by close associates or where other potential conflicts of interest may arise. In these cases, another Editor who does not have conflicts will be assigned to handle the paper.

Editors will also ensure that papers submitted by members of the journal’s Editorial Advisory Board are handled without prejudice.

Reviewers must be selected that do not have potential conflicts of interest, to the best of the Editor’s knowledge. (Reviewers are expected to notify the Editor of any potential conflicts when they are invited to review a paper.)

Reviewers

Prompt and informed review of papers is essential, so reviewers should only accept invitations to review a paper when they have sufficient subject knowledge and time to complete the review in an appropriate period. If this is not the case, they must inform the Editor at the earliest opportunity.

Conflicts of interest

Reviewers should not undertake reviews of papers in which they may have a conflict of interest: for instance, one of the authors is a close associate or the paper may discuss results that could directly influence research the review is currently engaged on. If the reviewer has any doubts, these should be discussed with the Editor before accepting the review.

Reviews should be written in a constructive and helpful way. Most papers are neither immediately accepted nor rejected, and reviewers’ reports are a vital part of the process of improving the paper and, where possible, bringing it to an acceptable standard.

Confidentiality

Reviewers must keep details of papers they are reviewing confidential until those details are published.

Ethical considerations

Reviewers should comment if they believe that research has been conducted or may have been conducted outside relevant ethical standards.

Authors

Authors need to consider a number of things beyond simply “writing up their results”.

Authorship

It is the responsibility of the author submitting the paper to the journal to ensure that the list of authors accurately reflects the contribution of each author. All authors must have agreed to have their name included and be happy for the paper to be submitted to the journal.

All authors should sign the journal’s publishing agreement before it is submitted. Should it prove difficult to obtain signatures from one or more authors, the corresponding author may sign on their behalf as long as he/she has explicit permission to do so and this is stated on the form.

Conflicts of interest

Sources of funding and potential conflicts of interest must be reported in the paper. If you are in any doubt whether something should be disclosed, please consult the Editor-in-Chief.

Copyright material

If you need to reproduce material (figures, tables etc.) from other sources, you must obtain explicit permission before submitting the paper and include any copyright statements and acknowledgements that may be required in the manuscript. Please include copies of any permissions you have obtained with the manuscript.

Needless to say, it is unacceptable to include plagiarised material, or material that has already been published without permission and acknowledgement. IM Publications Open is a member of CrossRef's SimilarityCheck and screens submissions for potential plagiarism.

Ethical considerations

Any research that is reported must have been carried out in accordance with prevailing ethical standards and within current legislation. It is helpful to include a section within your paper detailing this.

Data and results must be presented accurately and without inappropriate manipulation or selection.

Should an author discover, after publication, any significant inaccuracy or error, they must inform the Editor-in-Chief as soon as practical. After investigation, the journal will publish a Corrigendum or Erratum. Should the errors invalidate the results described in the paper, a retraction of the paper may be appropriate.

Publisher

The Publisher supports Editors in their work and is responsible for publication of accepted papers. The Publisher will ensure prompt publication after acceptance and that authors can check proofs for any copy editing or other corrections that may have been made to the manuscript before its publication. In the rare event that authors do not respond to proofs, the paper may be published after checking of the proofs by the Editor-in-Chief.

The Publisher is a member of CrossRef's SimilarityCheck and screens submissions for plagiarism.

Should errata (errors introduced by the publisher), corrigenda (author errors) or retractions need to be published, the Publisher will ensure that these appear promptly.

Complaints

Initially, complaints concerning the editorial and peer review process should be directed to JSI’s Editor-in-Chief. If a satisfactory reply is not received, please contact the Publisher.
