A Handbook of Derivatives for Mass Spectrometry

by Vladimir Zaikin and John Halket

Chapter Summary

This chapter reports various chemical and mass spectral characteristics of alkylation (arylation) as another common type of derivatisation. This modification procedure involves the replacement of a hydrogen atom in carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, alcohols and phenols, mercaptans, primary and secondary amines, amides and N-substituted amides, sulphonamides and CH-acids (of the type RCO – CH2 – COR′) by an alkyl (or aryl) group.
