The XXIst International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS XXI) took place at Brunel Universty, West London 2008. From 1976 until 2002 it had been customary for the Proceedings of the Raman Conference to be published as a hard back volume under the auspices of John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. For the first time this has now been published under the auspices of IM Publications.

The opening plenar lecture by Professor Wolfgang Kiefer provides an introduction to the presentations at ICORS XXI on coherent femtosecond Raman spectroscopy, as well as a more general overview of the recent advances in this area. The summary of the contributions on a timely subject represents a new departure for the ICORS conference. There are 10 plenary lectures and 43 invited lectures which report exciting recent developments in diverse areas of Raman Spectroscopy. In addition, there are 499 contributed oral and poster presentations. The abstracts have been reproduced from the materials that were supplied by the communicating authors.
