Usha - the biggest operational differences between the classic "UV-Vis-Nir" instruments and modern NIR instruments are that:

1) The UV-Vis-Nir instruments tend to have much higher spectral resolution, which isn't a problem

2) The UV-Vis-Nir instruments tend to have much higher noise, which is.

To some extent, you can use software to combine several adjacent wavelength's worth of data into one, and thereby reduce the noise level of that computed data. Whether this will be "good enough" will depend on the application, as well as on the specifics of the behavior of your instrument.
