Sap number is a straight forward Beers Law Mid_IR application.

Dear Henk-Jan Ramaker,

We have some experience in the analysis of fatty acids in different fats and oils, but not for SN. However, may be it will be for your future work to have a look in our review of the application of fats and oils (Garrido-Varo, Ana; Garca-Olmo, J. and Prez-Marn, M.D. (2004). In: NIR Spectroscopy in Agriculture (Chapter 19). C. Roberts., R. Windham and J.(Eds).American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). 2004. pp: 487-558).

We reviewed all the quantitative and qualitative applications of NIRS for the analysis of many fats and oils. Concerning saponification number we reviewed an interesting paper of Li et al (1999): ,

Li et al. (Li, H., F.R., Van de Voort, J. Sedman, and A.A. Ismail. 1999. Rapid determination of cis and trans content, iodine value, and saponification number of edible oils by fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy. J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc. 76:491-497.

They studied FT-NIR for simultaneously determining the cis, trans, IV values and saponification number (SN) of edible fats and oils, using spectra recorded over the range 10000-4000 cm-1 (1100-2500 nm). Reference data for cis/trans, IV and SN were obtained using a Nicolet Magna FT-MIR spectrometer.
The results obtained clearly indicated that FT-NIR is capable of producing high quality cis-trans, IV and SN data. The paper compared the direct NIRS prediction of SN versus the calculated by the known expression IV = 0.8601 cis + 0.8601 trans. The cis and trans values were obtained from the FT-NIR equations developed. The relationship between the predicted and calculated IV values had a r value of 0.999 and a SD = 0.93.

I hope this information can be of help for you. Best regards

Ana

Dear all,

At the moment, we are investigating the possibilities to predict the saponification number/value using NIR. The saponification number is determined to quantify the reaction of a metallic alkali (base) with a fat or oil to form soap.

I would appreciate it if any of you can point me to the direction of interesting publications. Or maybe share some experiences that some of you might already have.

Many thanks in advance,

Henk-Jan Ramaker
