Malcolm, Yes, 470 is some way from 600nm! However you might get away with it if a) there are no other coloured compounds between 470 and 600 and b)Astaxanthin is similar to many electronic absorptions in having a long "tail". (Yes it sounds a bit "fishy"). Best wishes, Tony |

Dear Malcom, Another manufacturer is Integrated Spectronics (www.intspec.com). They have a portable PbS detector based system (ie 1100-2500 nm), aimed at the field geologist, and a handheld unit based on a Si photodiode array detector (400-1050 nm) (in which I must declare some interest, having been connected to its development). Thanks Howard and Tony, I'll follow up with these other manufacturers. I also had a look at the FANTEC gun. I'm not sure whether 600 nm would be sufficient. Astaxanthin (the main colour component within salmon flesh) has a strong absorption maximum around 470 nm, so I would assume (?) I'll get better correlation with a unit that would also scan this. This has given me a good start ! |

Hello Malcolm, Welcome to the Discussion Group. Are you sure you need such an extensive wavelength range? The cover of the Special Issue of NIR news (16/7) shows a fish being probed by a FANTEC "FQR-NIR Gun"; its wavelength range is only 600 - 1100 nm but I would guess that this would provide adequate information for fat and colour. Best wishes, Tony PS You can download a .PDF file of 16/7 from the NIR Publications website |

Malcolm - at least three manufacturers provide NIR instruments with hand-held capability in a "gun" enclosure: Brimrose, Infrared Fiber Systems and Polychromix. However, I don't know how far into the visible any of them goes. You'll have to contact them and see if any can meet your needs. Howard \o/ /_\ |

Hi, Please excuse (my first post) if this is a bit too similar to a post by Kathryn Lee a few months back asking NIR/colour units. I am specifically after a hand-held ("gun") or portable unit, eg. thats is capable of scanning in region 350 to 2500 nm. I know ASD make a unit - searching for other manufacturers (have spent several hours on the web without much result). My application: want to assess fat and colour in salmon fillets. Many thanks. |
