Bruce - Rob Lodder did some work on NIR of artwork a very long time ago. I don't know if he's kept up his interest, but it wouldn't hurt to ask him.

I also used to know a fellow named Norbert Baer. He did conservation for the Museum of Natural History in New York. Although he was not himself a spectroscpist, he would know if there was any work in NIR related to art, I think. But he must be retired by now. If you want, I could try to see if I can get you in touch with him. On the other hand, maybe all you need to do is to call the museum and ask for whoever does that sort of stuff now. Or maybe even a museum that is closer to you, I have a feeling that any museum must have an interest in conservation work, for their own self-protection if nothing else.

Bruce:

There are a number of articles describing this from the 80s. You may recall an FT-NIR instrument was used to evaluate artwork at the Hagley Museum.

You might also inform your friend that Raman spectroscopy is also very useful in this area and the new low cost systems are generating a lot of interest for this application. I think the two techniques in combination might be a very powerful investigative tool. You might also suggest he contact the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Conservatory Department. I think they might be among the leaders in this field.

A friend who investigates art fraud is interested in the usage of NIR in his field. Does anyone know of the application of NIR in the art field and how to get information on that usage? He would be interested in literature references as well as unpublished work.
Bruce
