Dear PCA - FOSS should be able to provide you with the software to put into a computer, that will read the data from the instrument. I would expect that their VISION software would do it, unless they have a special package for this instrument. If you use VISION, that has a lot of capability besides collecting the data. As MPDC says, JCAMP is about the best and most nearly standardized file format for transferring NIR data. VISION has the capability to export data in JCAMP format, so if the VISION package itself doesn't do what you need, you have a path to other software packages with any capabilities you want.

"The nice thing about standards is there are so many you can choose from." Communication in the NIR world is awefull, abysmal, horrible. On-line analysers will sometimes offer industry- standards like 4-20mA or Modbus, but in the lab you are in the wild, wild west. Even in file formats everybody does more or less his own "thing", with the JCAMP standard (a souped-up text file)probably the only succesfull standard. It is probably not that difficult to get results out by reading a serial port or ActiveX control, but be prepared to do some programming in e.g. Visual Basic or Java to glue your analyser to a database. (I never worked with this specific instrument.)

Pioneer Commodity Analysis (Pca)
Posted on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 10:44 am:

Hi,

Im opening a laboratory for commodities analysis in the UK. I will be using the FOSS infratech 1241 NIR analyser. It boasts connectivity so that a computer can 'pull' the results out of the 1241 and into a database or spreadsheet.

Has anyone done this? Does anyone know of someone who has got this functionality to work?

Would I be better using a different piece of equipment (it will mainly be testing cereals and pulses)?

Any input would be welcome. Thanks.
