Dear Potential Delegate to IDRC (and registered delegates!),

Gary Ritchie has asked me to advertise the fact that in addition to a wonderful conference, IDRC also provides a series of pre-conference short courses which will be of interest to the NIR novice to the NIR expert. I declare an interest - I am one of the course tutors - so have a look at the website (http://www.idrc-chambersburg.org/) it may be sufficient to persuade you and your boss that you should attend.
Hope to see you there!
Best wishes,
Tony

Seek Nominations for the Birth Award for Spectroscopy and Travel Awards to the IDRC in Chambersburg

The Council for NIR Spectroscopy (CNIRS) sponsors awards that are given at meetings of the International Diffuse Reflectance Conference (IDRC) that meets in Chambersburg, PA every 2 years. The next meeting will be held in August, 2006. The Gerald Birth Award for Spectroscopy recognizes a specific accomplishment in advancing the Art and Science of Spectroscopy by a senior research scientist. All scientists performing research in Diffuse Reflection Spectroscopy or in Diffuse Transmission Spectroscopy in the visible, NIR or IR regions are eligible for the award. The award-winning work must have been published between 01-Jan-2004 and 31-Dec-2005. More information about the Award is found at the website www.idrc-chambersburg.org. The Awards Committee is requesting nominations for this prestigious award, which features a cash award and free travel to the meeting to present the award-winning work. The monetary support is sponsored by Unity Scientific, Inc. The application deadline has been extended to Feb 27 for the submission of nominating materials to David Hopkins, Chair of the CNIRS Awards Committee, at [email protected].

Travel awards are also available to attend the meeting. These are open to students and researchers in the area of diffuse transmission or reflection spectroscopy. These awards may be supplemented by prizes for best posters in either the senior or student categories. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to submit posters presenting their work. More information about the Award is found at the website www.idrc-chambersburg.org. Materials supporting the application for travel awards should be sent to David Hopkins at the address above by February 27, for forwarding to the appropriate CNIRS Subcommittee.

All awards will be announced by March 14, 2006. Please submit nominations as soon as possible, and by February 27 at the latest.

In connection with the next IDRC, the "Chambersburg" meeting, in 2006, we are engaged in a project to document the early history of NIR. Accordingly we are interested in hearing from anyone who has documents from the early days. We are particularly interested in obtaining minutes of the meetings of the Council for NIR Spectroscopy prior to 1988. If anyone has copies of any of these old documents, please contact me either on the discussion group or privately at [email protected]
