Hi, I have a problem finding right sensor for my process.
My task is to optimize temperature in a fluidbed-dryer which produce pellets. My plan is to use a Nir process device to display the moisturelevel from the pellets. And use the 4-20 mA signal from the nir sensor to increase/decrease temperature in the dryer. The question is: Is there anybody out there who got som good books to recomend about Nir theory? usage? etc? What kind of optimizing would
be optimum?

Gudbrand - the best introductory book is the "Handbook of Near-Infrared Analysis" 2nd ed., Burns & Ciurczak, eds., Marcel Dekker (2001). It includes several chapters dealing with the basics, and a good number of chapters about different application areas, including pharmaceuticals. There are many references to the primary literature, as well.

Also, if you are going to Pittcon, which is in two weeks from now, there are short courses in NIR analysis being given there; I would recommend that you register for one of them.

Hi Gudbrand,

In addition to the direct e-mail - so people can comment on my comment if they so choose to do -

When you say pellets - it comes to my mind that you are referring to large - 4 to 10 mm in diameter or may be larger.

To recommend a suitable sensor - regardless of the NIR technology you will be using we do need to know:
1. The pellet size.
2. Is this a continuous moving bed, or a batch bowl type bed?
3. If it is a continuous bed - what is the approximate speed of motion of the pellets?

Answers to these questions will help to suggest a suitable sensor.

Anyone has additional questions or comments is welcome to ask.

Thanks,

The pellet product size varies from 1 mm in diameter to about a 1cm. What is the optimum position of the Nir device? My plan is to use the nir device after the fluid bed dryer, and send the moisturesignal to the regulator which increase/decrease the heat in the dryer?

Hi Gudbrand,
We are in the process of evaluating the use of NIR in a similar situation.
The only way that you will find an "Optimum" position for your sensor is by trial and error. Also, because you are the one with the knowledge of the configuration and operating conditions of your process, common sense will have to come into it as you are the only one in a position to be able to view the process.
I suspect it will not be absolutely critical where you site the sensing device but near the end of the process stream would seem sensible. Because the process is (presumably) a dynamic one all you need to do is to set the sensor and the Process Logic Controller up and make adjustments to the feedback loop such that you achieve the end result. Treat your own thought processes as part of the logic loop and you will achieve the result you want.
That being said there is still a lot of work to do to achieve that end result.Good luck
Dennis
