Hi Anakshi,

Adulterants are substances that should not be present in a given product. The word should be reserved for substances that are deliberately added in place of an active or beneficial ingredient to make more profit for those selling the product.

In the UK the Laboratory of the Government Chemist was set-up in 1842 and its first work was in the detection of adulteration of tobacco; this was probably the world�s first official analytical laboratory.

If you have a set of known genuine samples, then NIR is a very good way of detecting adulteration in suspect samples.
