We are about to start scanning a range of samples from an ecological study. Depending on the conditins, at times we have quite large samples, but at other times they are very small.

We are using spinning cup attachments, so have bought micro-inserts from Foss (part n0. IH-0337). However, they come with no instructions on use.The cups are about 60mm across, while the diameter of the smallest insert is only about 6mm.

We would love to get some advice on their use. In particular, we do not know whether the spectrum from a large sample, without using the insert, is the same as the spectrum from the same sample but using the insert.

That is, once we begin to use the inserts, do we have to scan all samples with the inserts? And if so, do we have to use the same size inserts?

If anyone can provide advice on this we'd really appreciate it.

thanks,
Ivan Lawler.

Ivan - have you contacted FOSS with your questions? Contacting either Katherine Bakeev at FOSS headquarters, or your local representative should answer at least some of your questions.

The answers to others, such as whether using the inserts will give different spectra, could probably be answered most easily just by trying it: i.e., take a few samples and measure them both ways, and then compare the spectra.

If nothing else, it would be good practice in handling your samples and measuring their spectra, before you start doing it for your calibration.
