Sudoku

Sudoku has nothing to do with mathematics which is why I produced puzzles for NIR news which used letters rather than numbers. (I have to confess that my assistant Heather Parker, who is quite good at Sudoku, used to convert them to numbers before she checked them for me).

Sudoku produced very little interest from readers of NIR news which is why I stopped producing them. Some of them took quite a long time to produce because I had wanted to use the letters to deliver a message but I think devising Sudoku problems is more interesting than solving them (I have a computer program that does the most boring work).
The Scientific American article that Howard alerted us to is very interesting.

Happy puzzling in 2007!

Tony

I'm a big fan of sudoku. But more than math skills I think it helps to develop the 'logical thinking'. Of course, each difficulty level requires more technique, and to find out ways to solve it faster. I encorage people to try it! you don't need to be very good in calculus, just be logic. It is also very good to keep your mind awake!

Sudoku may not seem scientific enough for this forum, but I think this post addresses that. Besides that it's in NIR News now as a regular feature.

All the Sudoku fans out there who have access to Scientific American (in a library, perhaps) may like to know that the latest issue of S.A (June, 2006 issue, page 80) has a full article discussing the mathematical and other scientific aspects of this "game", and be interested in looking it up.

Obviously, anyone who subscribes to S.A. will have seen it for themselves and doesn't need me to tell them about it!

And if it's scientific enough for S.A. then I think it's scientific enough for a posting here!

Howard
