Regarding process analysis using NIR, when was the first application and what was it? "Mac" Fred gave me some process citations from the CNIRS Biblio, early 80's perhaps, but nothing conclusive for me to cite. I don't want to cite the wrong one, lest I feel the wrath of the NIR Gods!. I need the answer ASAP or I am going to go with what I find on my own.

Gary,

There is a fundamental problem here. The earlier applications of near IR in process analysis did not generally use the term "near IR." They used "IR" even when they meant the region we now call near IR. So, citations based on your search term would be misleading.

There have been many, early applications of near IR in process analysis done by companies such as (Thermo) Moisture Systems, (NDC)Infrared Engineering, Monitek, Moisture Register, Anacon, DuPont (Ametek now), ABB, and others. These were (and still are) filter instruments, and most were moisture analyzers, but other filters were used as well for alcohol/water, acetone, and sodium hydroxide for example. I have a copy of an internal report describing an Anacon water and alcohol combination from 1980 as an example, but I don't have a record of the history of the instruments. Probably someone from an instrument company could be more helpful, or you could search for moisture analyzers, IR.

The earliest reference I see by looking through a couple of books is an Intech article by R. C. Garner from January, 1968, concerning moisture in paper, but I doubt that is the first.

If you need more information, I can supply some names of people at some of these companies, on Monday.

Lois
