A foot doctor has suggested Near Infrared as a possible treatment for my wife's neuropathy in her feet due to diabetes. Is there any source of information on this subject?

Mark,

For the most part, Near Infrared is an analytical technique for determining composition. However, I suspect your doctor is refering to the penetrating effect of the Herschel retion (700-1100nm). Human tissue has a transmission window in this region where a lot of energy can "get into" the tissue.

I am not aware of any publications related to treatment of NIR, but I will look into it. This is an exciting suggestion and one that deserves attention.

If I find anything, I will let you know; send me your email please. Fred McClure ([email protected])

Fred - two comments:

1) While I agree that a long discussion is probably better held off the discussion group, I think that a short synopsis of your finding might be of general interest, and should be added to this thread. I know I'd be interested in learning about what you find.

2) While I haven't heard of using NIR for thermo-therapy either, use of the heating effect of NIR goes back a long way, mostly in industrial applications including drying. Also, other medical applications of NIR go back at least as far as the first C'burg conference - the Friday AM session of that one was presented exclusively by physicians about medical applications, especially the detection of breast cancer in women by NIR imaging by diffuse transmission through the breast.
