Dear Colleagues,

The EU is funding a Virtual Institute for Chemometrics and Industrial Metrology!

Brussels, March 2002

The Virtual Institute for Chemometrics and Industrial Metrology (VICIM) funded by the
European Union has taken up operations. This European network of experts in chemometrics and metrology wants to enable industrial clients to face the challenges in the analysis of today's complex chemical measurement data and to ensure the quality of measurement results.

The integration of metrology and chemometrics in one virtual institute offers unique opportunities for creating new, fruitful synergies between the two disciplines.

Prof. D.L. Massart, Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, took the initiative for the institute, which comprises 13 centers from all over Europe. They include a broad range of competencies concerning both scientific methods as well as fields of applications, which are as diverse as food control and petrochemistry.

The VICIM will offer a broad range of services to the industrial community ranging from
- General and customized courses at the introductory and advanced level in several aspects of chemometrics and metrology such as: method validation, visualisation, modelling, etc.
- Precompetitive research and development through industrial consortia
- Competitive (commissioned) research in the agro-food, pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical and related sectors
- Hosting of industrial fellows
- Distance learning
- Consultancy
- Metrological support of standardisation bodies
- Guidelines and software

A scientific advisory board of industrial partners headed by Prof. Bernard Vandeginste, Unilever Research and Development, Vlaardingen (NL), emphasizes the orientation towards the needs and requirements of industrial customers.

After an initial three year's funding by the EU, the VICIM will become a self-supporting and independent Research Foundation.
