Hello Marijana,

Perhaps you can have a look on Q-interline.com here ABB FTNIR (formal Bomem) analysers are used, the new one without maintenance for the first 10 years is also better in signal to noise and we have sold a couple in the BeNeLux for silage and soil analysis. Our customers got better results and easier sampling than with the 6500 analyser they told us. If you need more information or you want to contact our customers let us know or send me an email to [email protected]

Here is a paper that has an excellent review of past work on NIR analysis of soils and also reports on a wide range of soil properties calibrations using 3768 well characterized samples:

Brown D.J., Shepherd K.D., Walsh M.G., Dewayne Mays M., Reinsch T.G.
Global soil characterization with VNIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy
(2006) Geoderma, 132 (3-4), pp. 273-290.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Survey Division of the United States Department of Agriculture is has a nationwide program to to derive a comprehensive inventory of soil carbon stocks for soils of the U.S. This program involves the analysis of soil samples from 35,000 sites. The analysis is being carried out using a network of about 20 intercalibrated AgriSpec NIR analyzers from ASD. Here is a link to a document describing the program:

Dear Marijana:
There is a lot of literature about soil infrared spectroscopy. Several research papers about it have been published in European journal of soil science and in geoderma. For quantification of soil attributes, usually the predictions using the mid-infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum outperforms the NIR predictions. You will find other proximal soil sensing techniques in the following link: http://www.proximalsoilsensing.org/
Concerning the NIR equipments, some companies such ASD have developed some instruments for laboratory and field use. Those instruments can also be used for both grains and animal feed.
I hope you find useful this information
Regards,
Leonardo Ramirez-Lopez

Hi Marijana,

i worked with NIR AOTF from brimrose on soil analysis in laboratory and published an article few months ago about it.
If you want more informations, i would be pleased to send them by email and discuss about this topic.
regards

Hi Marijana,
Two years ago I went to a soil congress and NIR was mentioned several times as a routine tool for soil mapping. I'll be happy to send you some articles on the subject, if you send me your email on david(at)msanjose.net

At least for FOSS Instruments (which is the brand I know), its the same instrument and configuration for soil and animal feed (reflectance). It also works fine for grains altoug milling may be required depending on the type of grain.

Maybe this topic was discussed before, sorry if so. I'm interested if the NIR has developed practical use in soil analysis (organic matter, N, P, K content, pH) and who are the main manufacturers of that equipment. Also, is there an equipment that can analyse both grains or animal feed and soil?
Thanks!
Marijana
