I work in a oleochemical company on Merseyside who use NIR for alot of there product analysis fatty acid side, gylcerine and also currently building ester product models, I have nearly five years worth of experience with NIRS, FOSS XDS instrument, from building calibrations, qualitative and quantatative, to long term validation of models, also general maintanence and instrument calibration, and i am the site expert. However the company whom I work for has recently announced that they are shutting the site and making everyone on site redundant. I am therefore looking for a job, prefereably NIR orientated as current roll involves general laboratory work also. Does anyone know of any NIR specific internet sites which advertise NIR analysts/technician jobs, I am willing to travel possibly move for a new job and a new challenge.

Dear colleagues,
The company for which I work, International Paper (IP), has been hit particularly hard the economic downturn. As a result, a few weeks ago it announced a major restructuring which will result in the elimination of 3,000 jobs. In the process, a very large portion of the advanced research staff has been cut, and with it IP's work in NIR is being brought to an end.

As IP's senior scientist specializing in NIR and chemometric research, I need to find a new job, and naturally, I intend to stay in the field.
However, my current situation has made me aware that there seems to be no good career forum on the Internet for companies and professionals working in NIR. The purpose of this message is two fold:
1. I'd like to offer to help establish a site that could serve as clearinghouse for career opportunities in the NIR field.

2.I'd also like to share with you two short paragraphs in which I summarize my background and the kind of work I'm looking for. If any of you have the time to look this over and have any ideas about suitable opportunities for someone with my qualifications, I would be very grateful if you could share that information with me.

I will begin with the two paragraphs on me, and then I'll turn to the potential NIR career website.

Currently I am a Near Infrared Spectroscopy / Chemometrics Specialist at International Paper (IP), developing on-line/at-line methods to monitor and control manufacturing processes. At IP I have been championing advancing innovative and experimental research , but these activities are no longer aligned with the company's strategy for regaining its financial health. As a result, despite the successful outcomes of my work, NIR research at IP has been halted and my position will be eliminated at the end of October. I am seeking new career opportunities where my expertise and skills can be better utilized. I have more than five years of work experience in near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics with strong background in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and statistics. I can not attach my résumé due to the format of the discussion forum. If you are interested in, please contact me at following telephone number or by e-mail address, so I can forward my résumé to you. Please feel free to direct this message if you know a company that is looking for someone of my expertise.

Now for the NIR career website:

After beginning to search for new career opportunities in the NIR field, I have found that there is no website that serves as a clearinghouse for job opportunities for NIR spectroscopist and chemometricians. About three years ago somebody suggested the idea of having a employment center through the NIR discussion group (run by Bruce Campbell), but to the best of my knowledge there was no follow up on that idea. I think it is important that we, as a scientific community with a common interest, organize such a site as it would not only provide career opportunities, but may even help foster advancement in the field. If there is support among you, I will be gladly coordinating it. However, rather than setting up an independent site, it strikes me that the NIR publications might be the best site for this purpose since it is most widely referred website among NIR spectroscopists. (Tony, what do you think?). If any of you have any ideas or suggestions, I would welcome them.

Finally, I should say, that I have enjoyed being a part of this NIR discussion group, and know that it has so far not been used for sharing career information. Before posting this note I discussed my plans with Bruce Campbell and he felt that the members of our group would not mind my bringing these points to your attention.

Thanks very much for your time, collegiality and support.
Sincerely,

Hyesun Park McNulty

Yes, I agree with your point-we NIR family should have a career website.

I have significant experiences in FTIR/NIR/Raman spectroscopy and chemometrics, unfortunately, I am still looking for a position.

I agree that this would be a good idea and that NIR Publications would be a suitable site!

Before I start researching possible software, does anyone have any experience of sites offering this type of service that I could have a look at and see what they are using? It would probably be sensible if replies were sent to me by e-mail to avoid clogging up this group: [email protected].

Just an idea but you may want to think about the possibilities of using scientific recruiters - possibly have them post jobs on your site like I have done - I'm sure not many know about it and to that end, it remains a secret little resource which doesnt help the candidate as such - I notice you are international in the field of NIR and would suggest a scientific recruiter from nominated countries???

I am also seeking employment. I have a solid background in near-infrared applications (calibrations and process monitoring of starches and polymer emulsions) using Foss NIRSystems software and Model 6500 spectrometer; mid-infrared (interpretation) as well as UV-visible, Raman and NMR. I am intermediate-user proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel softwares, slightly less so in Lotus 123. I'm also experienced in a Lotus Notes-based LIMS as well as Notes Mail. If anyone is interested here is text version of my resume.
