Dear Ole,

Thanks for the post. The problem is less the tools than the people to feed the system. Ana and the university of Cordoba have already invested a lot (in time) and the moodle (a free, open-source PHP web application) tool is appropriate. You will be asked a day (as volunteer) to feed the courses!
CU you in Cape Town

Pierre

https://www.vbulletin.com/ - this is a nice program - it allow you to search and view threads in a more userfriendly way. It is not that expensive. But I guess the real problem is who is going to set it up initailly. Just a thought. But this format currently in use is kind of outdated. It does allow you to advertise (I think) - so maybe it can pay for itself. I am not a big blogger - but I am sure there is other similar programs out there.

Ana - good move to a new thread. The only problem is that we've lost the continuity with the previous messages. If anyone comes new to this discussion, they can find the previous messages of this thread at: http://www.impublications.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?5/10737 (you might have to go to the bottom and work your way up, to find the beginning, which I think arguably started with Don Dahm's first posting.)

In any case, I think you've done a good job in helping out the Spanish NIR community, but in a sense are in the same predicament as I'm in: the word isn't getting spread more widely. Not your fault, I think, it's just that marketing (which is what we're really concerned with here) is inherently a tough job.

Another problem I see happenning is that because there is already some misinformation that exists, a newcomer is as likely to encounter it as to learn correct information, and likely there is no way to correct this. Part of that is a result of what you said: there's a long and steep learning curve between what can be presented in a course, and the realities of implementing an NIR method in a real operational situation.

Education, in the broader sense, is ultimately the answer, but we should also be trying to think of a more focussed short-term solution as well.

BTW - since I will not be attending the conference in Cape Town, I wonder if you could send me a summary of that review of NIR education that your student is preparing, after the conference. I would really like to see it and learn what's going on.

Dear all,

I think that we opened an interesting discussion but in the wrong topic. We all are always too busy to change to the right topic.

Howard, I would like to answer all the questions you bring to the forum concerning NIRS Education, but I do not have enough time to do it. So I will try to summarize main points :

1. Yes, several of us are teaching NIRS tring to cover the fundamentals of spectroscopy, statistics, qualitative and quantitative modelling, and applications. I am doing that at the University of Cordoba since the 90s. The courses offered range from regular (ie. offered to BSc, Msc and phD students in Agriculture Engineering) to those offered as part of the UCO professional development programs. I can say without any doubt that our courses introduced to NIRS to most of the Spanish professionals involved at present with NIRS either in Education & Research, Industries and Laboratories and NIRS companies. Something that I really experienced is that you need many hours (years) of education to get the professional who can take the knowledge into industry, farms, hospitals, etc. or who can follow his/her own research on basic NIRS knowldge.

2. At world level, there is a broad offer of NIRS training courses as you mentioned. One of my student review that offer and we got interesting conclussions about. I will show some of the results on Cape Town. We analysed main features of those courses such us prices, acreditations, location, contents, duration, etc, The prices are really different from one course to another and academic or professional accreditacion is so rare.

3. The IVPTL- NIRS educational project do not try to offer one single course using Moodle (please see NIR news Volume 22 Issue 2, Pages 1919 (2011). It is something else. It is an international collaborative and once more "voluntarist" project to offer a broad range of NIRS courses and self-learning materials in an e-learning environment.

4. The project is just starting and as I will say in Cape Town there are two main tasks: to find "volunteers" whose like to dedicate time and effort to make the project a reallity and to find funds from Universities, Research and Education Funding Bodies, NIRS companies, etc.

I said I will be short but I didnt

Good night

Ana
