There is a lot of activity going on in standardisation bodies which is of relevance and interest to readers in their daily NIR-related activities. Interaction with these bodies is not for the faint-hearted, but this article provides an overview of one of the main organisations—ASTM. This, first article of two, gives an overview of ASTM and how it functions, while the second will explain the operations of two committees of practical importance to NIR.
