Estimation of whole-tree wood quality traits using near infrared spectra of increment cores

There are several hundred eucalypt species but, of those, only 30 to 40 species are of economic importance; in addition, the number of species suited to plantation establishment for pulpwood production is further limited to just a few. For these select species, tree breeders have aimed to improve growth, form and wood properties. This article discusses how near infrared spectroscopy can be used to estimate these traits.
