NIR spectroscopy on peatlands: an emerging tool for monitoring climate change impact

Global climate change is becoming increasingly evident in recent decades, and is manifested through variable and severe weather. An immense reservoir of carbon that is at risk of being seriously impacted by global warming receives insufficient attention at present. This is the carbon stored in peatlands. Near infrared spectroscopy is ideally suited to gathering detailed data on carbon inventories and dynamics in peatlands, as well as monitoring moisture levels that are critical in evaluating the risk of fire.
