Can near infrared spectroscopy help meet the challenge of assessing nutrient intake by grazing cows?

Animal agriculture is focused on efficiency of feed conversion because of the increasing world population, competition for feedstuffs such as corn for ethanol) and decreasing land availability for food production. To measure efficiency, one must measure the inputs and outputs. This article determines if near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy could be used in conjunction with other techniques (possibly double sampling) to evaluate animal-to-animal variation in intake of nutrients by grazing cows.
